The Sunken Palace — a 6th-century underground Byzantine water cathedral.
Overview
The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is Istanbul's subterranean wonder — 336 marble columns rising from the water-covered floor of a vast 6th-century Byzantine reservoir, the whole spectacle lit in atmospheric amber light. The Medusa head column bases add a touch of mystery.
Highlights
Marble columns reflected in still water — uniquely atmospheric underground space.
Two ancient Medusa column bases repurposed from a Roman structure — one sideways, one upside-down.
