Ancient underground cities carved 85 metres into volcanic rock.
Overview
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are two of Cappadocia's extraordinary underground cities — multi-level subterranean complexes carved into the rock that housed tens of thousands of early Christians hiding from persecution. Derinkuyu descends 85 metres and had capacity for 20,000 people.
Highlights
85 metres deep — 18 levels of tunnels, churches, stables, and ventilation shafts.
Narrower tunnels and low ceilings make for an intensely atmospheric exploration.
Itinerary
Hotel pickup, Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, guided 1.5-hour underground tour, valley view, return.
