UNESCO-listed Portuguese fort guarding Mombasa's ancient harbour.
Overview
Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in 1593 to dominate the Old Port of Mombasa — one of Africa's finest examples of 16th-century military architecture. The fort's museum tells the story of four centuries of Arab, Portuguese, Omani, and British control, while the adjacent Old Town's narrow lanes drip with Swahili history.
